Your guide to Koh Samet

View activities

Rayong · Eastern Gulf Coast · Thailand

Koh Samet is an island off Rayong on Thailand's eastern Gulf coast. Its beach stays can combine with a Bangkok or Pattaya itinerary, provided you allow for the road and boat journey. Choose the bay that fits your holiday style, then add an excursion without crowding out time on the island.

Hat Sai Kaew

Hat Sai Kaew is one of Samet's better-known beach areas, with a livelier setting. Check how accommodation and activity meeting points relate to the beach, particularly if you prefer to keep local travel short.

Quieter bays

Ao Prao offers a different coastal atmosphere from the busier beach areas. Compare where you stay with the excursions you want, rather than choosing a hotel solely by the island name.

Nearby island excursions

Rayong's offshore outings can include places such as Koh Kudi. Confirm the actual island stops, snorkelling equipment and return arrangements; a Samet stay does not automatically include a boat tour.

Connect through the right pier

Ban Phe is a mainland departure area for Rayong's island journeys. Check your provider's exact pier and arrival arrangement, plus the onward transfer to your accommodation, before fixing other plans.

Keep a flexible beach itinerary

November to February is a commonly recommended period for Rayong visits. Conditions still vary by day, so check current advice for water activities and leave room to adjust an offshore excursion.

Questions about visiting Koh Samet

Is Koh Samet the same place as Koh Samui?

No. Koh Samet is off Rayong on the eastern Gulf coast; Koh Samui is farther south in Surat Thani province. They need different transfers and should not be selected interchangeably when booking.

Can I add Samet to a Bangkok or Pattaya trip?

Yes, as a separate island stop. Allow for the road transfer, crossing and accommodation arrival. An overnight stay leaves more beach time than a tightly timed return visit.

Which Samet beach area should I choose?

Hat Sai Kaew suits a livelier beach setting, while Ao Prao offers a quieter alternative. Compare your accommodation location and activity departures with the atmosphere you want.

Do I need an extra boat trip during a Samet stay?

Only if you want to explore other marine stops. Time on the island's own beaches can be enough for a short stay. Compare the excursion duration with the free time you want to keep.
