Full Moon Party in Koh Phangan: what to expect

The Full Moon Party takes place at Haad Rin Nok, also known as Sunrise Beach, on the southeastern tip of Koh Phangan. It is a beach nightlife event with different venues and sound systems along the shoreline. Your experience can be a few hours of music and people-watching or a longer night with friends. There is no need to stay until sunrise to enjoy it.

Haad Rin Nai, or Sunset Beach, is on the other side of the peninsula. Keep that distinction in mind when choosing a hotel, arranging a boat arrival or sharing a meeting point. A booking that simply says Haad Rin does not identify the exact beach or the route back to your room. Our first-timer’s guide explains how to turn the published party date into a realistic visit.

How to use the Full Moon Party schedule

Start with the announced event date in the tables above, then match your accommodation and transport to that evening in Thailand time. Full Moon Party dates can move around major Buddhist religious observances or other local announcements. An astronomical moon-phase calendar is useful for astronomy, but it is not a substitute for the organizer’s event schedule. The separate New Year countdown on 31 December is labelled clearly in our tables.

Check the date before paying a deposit, again before your free-cancellation deadline and shortly before travelling. If you are arriving on an overnight international flight, compare the local arrival date with your hotel check-in date. Give the journey some breathing room: a delayed flight or changed ferry should not leave your entire visit depending on the final possible crossing. This page shows when its source was last checked and warns you when a fresh check was unavailable.

Getting to the Full Moon Party from Koh Samui

A Koh Samui to Full Moon Party trip has three parts: getting to your Samui departure point, crossing to Koh Phangan and reaching Haad Rin Beach. A boat ticket to Thong Sala still leaves a road transfer to arrange. A service advertised for Haad Rin needs its own exact landing and meeting instructions. Compare the complete journey rather than assuming every Koh Phangan ticket brings you to the party beach.

Choose your return plan before your outbound ticket. Staying overnight on Koh Phangan removes the need for a sea crossing after the party. Returning to Samui requires a confirmed service, boarding point and onward journey from the landing to your hotel. Travellers coming from Koh Tao or the mainland should apply the same checks to their own route. Timetables, piers and fares depend on the operator and travel date, so use your booking confirmation for those details.

Where to stay for the Full Moon Party

Haad Rin is the practical starting point if walking back after the event is your priority. Ask the property about the actual walking route, late-night access and noise around the room you are booking. A short map distance can hide steps, a steep driveway or a less convenient path. The closest room is not automatically the quietest, and the lowest nightly price is not always the lowest total cost.

Ban Tai and Thong Sala can work well as bases for a wider Koh Phangan holiday, with a party-night transfer added to the plan. More remote beaches may suit a longer stay, but the extra journeys matter on a short visit. Compare minimum-stay requirements, cancellation terms and return transport alongside the room rate. A relaxed arrival day and a free morning after the event are usually more useful than squeezing another distant stop into the itinerary.

Full Moon Party costs, packing and preparation

Build your Full Moon Party budget around the whole trip: required room nights, boats, local transfers, beach entry, meals and drinking water. Then allow separately for optional spending and an emergency reserve. A transfer package or private venue may have different inclusions from entry to the beach event. Confirm the current charges with the provider rather than treating a price quoted in an older article as a guaranteed total.

Wear comfortable footwear, carry a small secure bag and protect your phone from sand and rain. Keep passports and expensive valuables safely stored, save your accommodation pin offline and agree on a meeting point with friends. Put return money aside before the evening begins. Choosing a way home that does not require you to ride a motorbike after drinking is one of the most useful decisions you can make before leaving your hotel.

Koh Phangan weather and time around the party

Koh Phangan sits in the Gulf of Thailand, so advice for Phuket or Krabi’s Andaman coast does not describe the same seasonal pattern. Late-year rain and marine conditions deserve attention when planning an island crossing. A published party date does not guarantee that a particular ferry can sail. Check current weather information, local announcements and your transport operator’s instructions as your departure approaches.

Leave space for Koh Phangan beyond the event itself. Seeing Haad Rin in daylight helps you understand the beach, village streets and route home. A gentle meal or nearby beach visit fits party day better than an exhausting island circuit. Save longer walks and offshore excursions for a rested day with suitable conditions. Our guides below cover a three-day itinerary, daytime activities, packing and rainy-season planning so you can build a holiday around the date rather than just a night out.

Full Moon Party questions

Where is the Full Moon Party?

The Full Moon Party takes place on Haad Rin Beach on Koh Phangan, Thailand. The island is in the Gulf of Thailand, near Koh Samui.

Why can the party date differ from the full moon?

The party follows an announced event calendar rather than an astronomical full moon calculation. Organizers may move dates around major Buddhist holy days or local and government announcements. Check the official source before booking.

How do I get to Koh Phangan?

Koh Phangan is reached by boat. You can travel via Koh Samui or mainland ports. Check the arrival pier, onward transport to Haad Rin, last return boat and cancellation terms with your operator before booking.

Where should I stay?

Haad Rin puts you close to the event, while other parts of Koh Phangan may suit a quieter stay. Check the actual journey back, late-night transport and minimum-stay rules before reserving a room.

Is the New Year countdown a regular Full Moon Party?

The official calendar lists a separate countdown party on 31 December. We label it separately so you can distinguish it from that month's regular Full Moon Party.
