Haad Rin is a peninsula with more than one beach, and that small detail matters when you book a room, arrange a transfer or agree to meet friends. The Full Moon Party takes place at Haad Rin Nok, the eastern beach commonly called Sunrise Beach. Haad Rin Nai, on the western side, is usually called Sunset Beach. They belong to the same village area, but they are not interchangeable arrival points or identical places to stay.
This guide explains the geography you need for a visit: the main party beach, the village between the shores, the western beachfront, the southern end around Leela Beach, and the bays farther along the east coast. It is a guide to orientation rather than a promise about the position of individual bars or the layout of a future event. Venues, entrances, traffic arrangements and boat services can change.
Before choosing an area, confirm the party date using Tripnatic's Full Moon Party dates page and the event website. Then look at the actual property pin and route, rather than assuming that every address saying Haad Rin is equally convenient.
Haad Rin Nok: Sunrise Beach and the party shoreline
Haad Rin Nok is the beach to recognise first. It faces the eastern side of the peninsula and is the shoreline associated with the Full Moon Party. When someone casually says they are going to the party beach, this is normally the destination they mean.
During the day, seeing the bay makes the night's geography easier to understand. Walk from a recognisable village junction to the sand, note the route back and choose a meeting point outside the most congested beachfront flow. A map screenshot helps, but a real landmark is more useful when everyone is looking at small screens in a noisy crowd.
The event is spread along the beach with different venues and sound systems. You do not need to choose one perfect spot before arriving. Start by understanding your exits, then move around to find the music and density you prefer. Avoid treating an old photograph as a current map of bars or an official entrance diagram.
Who this area suits
The Sunrise Beach side suits travellers who want to be close to the event and are comfortable with the possibility of late noise. Proximity is particularly useful if you want to leave independently of friends or avoid a long road transfer after midnight.
For accommodation, ask specific questions. Does the room face the party beach? Is there a quieter building? What route reaches the room when the beachfront is crowded? Is access affected by local event arrangements? A hotel name or a single distance in metres cannot answer those questions.
A direct beachfront position can be convenient and scenic, but it is a poor choice if uninterrupted sleep is your main priority. Noise is not determined only by the distance shown on a map: building orientation, terrain and neighbouring venues all matter. Ask the property about its own circumstances during the exact event dates.
The village between the beaches
Much of the practical Haad Rin experience happens in the streets behind the sand. This is where visitors find food, shops and routes between the two sides of the peninsula. It is also where a clear address matters more than a generic instruction to meet “in Haad Rin.”
If staying in the village, inspect the pedestrian route to your accommodation in daylight. A room can be close to the beach without being directly on it, but your route may include steps, a slope or a narrow lane. Carrying a bag in afternoon heat and walking home tired at night are different experiences from checking the map at home.
The village can be a useful place for an early dinner before entering the busiest part of the event. Make it a practical stop: eat, charge your phone if possible, check your bag and agree on the group's return plan. Avoid assuming a business will stay open all night or allow everyone to use its facilities without asking.
Choose meeting points that survive a crowded evening
A specific hotel reception, shop frontage or other established landmark can work better than “the middle of the beach.” Confirm that everyone can identify it and that it is appropriate to wait there. Do not block a narrow route or use an emergency access point as your reunion spot.
Choose a second plan in case the first location is inaccessible. Decide how long to wait and what message to send before leaving. This is particularly helpful for groups staying in different areas, since one person may need to catch an arranged transfer while another can walk home.
Save the full accommodation address and reception contact offline. Battery life and mobile connectivity should support your plan, rather than be the only thing holding it together.
Haad Rin Nai: the western side, usually called Sunset Beach
Haad Rin Nai lies on the west-facing side of the peninsula. It offers a different relationship to the village and the sea from Sunrise Beach, and it is important to distinguish the name when arranging a room or pickup.
Some travellers prefer this side because it separates their accommodation from the main party shoreline. That can be a useful compromise, but it does not guarantee silence. Check the actual room position, nearby venues and pedestrian route. The correct question is whether the specific property suits your sleep and access needs.
The western side also includes the Haad Rin pier area. A ticket mentioning a different Koh Phangan pier should not be interpreted as an arrival at Haad Rin. Thong Sala is a separate destination elsewhere on the island, and the final road transfer needs to be included in your plan.
Is Sunset Beach a better base?
It can be if you want to remain in the Haad Rin area while stepping back from the main event beach. It can also suit a group where some people will attend the party and others prefer an earlier evening. Check the walk in advance and ask about the route after dark.
Do not choose solely by the word “sunset.” Weather and season influence what you see, and a western-facing address is not a guarantee of a clear horizon from your room. Look for accurate property photographs and specific information about the outlook.
Beach conditions should also be judged on the day. A different orientation may mean different wind and water conditions, but it is not a blanket safety rule. Follow local guidance and avoid entering the sea after drinking or at night.
Leela Beach: the southern end of the peninsula
Leela Beach, also known as Haad Seekantang, is around the southern part of the Haad Rin peninsula. It often appears in accommodation searches for visitors who want to stay near the event but prefer a different beach setting.
The practical detail is access. A route that looks short on a map can involve gradients, steps or a particular property entrance. Before booking, ask the accommodation to describe the walk to the party beach and whether it is appropriate after dark. Travellers with mobility requirements should obtain a precise answer, including the route from the road to the room.
If a property offers transport, confirm whether it is included, when it operates and how the return works on party night. A daytime shuttle or a normal reception transfer should not be assumed to run whenever you decide to leave the beach.
How to evaluate a southern-peninsula stay
Compare the entire stay: room position, food options, walking route and party-night access. The prettiest beach photograph does not tell you whether you will feel comfortable walking the approach at the end of the night.
For a couple or a mixed-interest group, this part of the peninsula may be attractive when the party is one evening within a broader holiday. For someone who wants to move repeatedly between room and event, direct access closer to Sunrise Beach may be simpler. Neither choice is automatically better; the route is what makes the difference.
Haad Yuan and Haad Tien: nearby on a map, separate in practice
The bays north of Haad Rin along the eastern coast deserve special care in planning. Haad Yuan and Haad Tien are not extensions of the party beach that you should casually add to a late-night walk. Their access conditions are a separate logistical question.
The Sanctuary, a property at Haad Tien, publishes its own arrival guidance involving boat transfers from Haad Rin. That is useful evidence of how the geography works, but a property's instructions do not guarantee that a boat will be available or suitable for your journey at any hour or in any weather.
If you book a stay in one of these bays, ask the actual property how guests should arrive and return on your travel dates. Discuss sea conditions, luggage, the final landing and what happens if a boat cannot operate. Do not build your party-night return around finding an informal ride after you have already left your room.
A bay visit and a party visit can be separate days
These bays can be part of a longer Koh Phangan holiday without being your base for Full Moon Party night. Staying in Haad Rin for the event and visiting a quieter bay on another day may be easier than combining both on a tight schedule.
The temptation is to judge distance by the coastline. Transport reality includes road access, terrain, boat availability and weather. Ask local operators and your accommodation about the current route rather than inferring it from a satellite image.
Ban Khai and Ban Tai: outside Haad Rin, with a road journey
Westward along the southern coast, Ban Khai and Ban Tai are different areas from Haad Rin. They can be sensible bases for travellers who want to explore more of the island, but they require a party-night road plan rather than a short village walk.
Ask your accommodation where shared or private transfers start, where they drop passengers and how returns are organised. Confirm the fare basis: per person, per vehicle, one way or return. The details matter more than a rough price copied from another traveller's trip.
The road approach includes hills, and the journey should not become an experiment in learning to ride a scooter. Arrange a driver if you are inexperienced, tired or planning to drink. Never count on driving yourself home after the event.
For groups, the most useful arrangement may be a fixed return meeting time and location. For travellers who prefer an open-ended night, accommodation within a verified walk of the event can provide more independence.
Understanding piers, transfers and arrival descriptions
Read arrival details literally. “Koh Phangan” is the island, “Thong Sala” is one arrival area, and “Haad Rin” is another part of the island. Your ticket's pier name determines where the next leg starts.
When arranging pickup, share the operator name, service date, arrival pier and booking reference only with the relevant provider. Ask what happens if the boat is late. If your hotel offers a transfer, confirm whether it meets all services or only selected arrivals.
For departure, repeat the same check in reverse. Going to the nearest-looking pier is not enough if your booked service leaves elsewhere. Allow time for the drive, any party-period congestion and the operator's check-in requirement.
A daylight orientation walk worth doing
You do not need a complex walking tour. Start at your accommodation, reach the village, find your planned beach approach, then return by the route you intend to use later. Identify a place to eat beforehand and the agreed meeting point.
Check the surfaces and lighting as well as distance. Think about how the route will feel in your actual footwear, after rain and when tired. If the answer is uncomfortable, revise the transport plan before the night begins.
Finally, distinguish a beach for photographs from a beach for swimming. The Full Moon Party's appeal is on land. Rough water, darkness and alcohol are reasons to stay out of the sea, regardless of how inviting it looked earlier.
How to choose your Haad Rin area
Choose Sunrise Beach for direct proximity if you accept the party environment. Consider the village or western side if you want a different room setting while staying within Haad Rin, after verifying the route. Evaluate Leela Beach property by property. Treat Haad Yuan and Haad Tien as separate access decisions, and Ban Tai or Ban Khai as road-transfer bases.
The best area is the one that makes your evening and your return understandable. An accurate pin, a checked walking route and a specific transfer arrangement are more valuable than a vague promise that somewhere is “near the Full Moon Party.”
