Christmas on Koh Samui works best when you decide what you actually want from 24 and 25 December before booking anything else. A family brunch with entertainment, a quiet Thai dinner and a beach-club afternoon are three different holidays. The island offers all three, but its beaches are separate districts. A table that looks close on a map can mean an inconvenient transfer from your hotel, especially when rain and holiday traffic arrive together.
This guide gives you two published 2026 dining options, a practical three-day route, alternatives for a smaller budget and the questions that prevent expensive booking mistakes. You do not need a gala every evening to have a memorable Christmas here. The strongest plan combines one festive anchor with time to discover the island around it.

The decisions to make first
Choose your main celebration: Christmas Eve dinner or Christmas Day lunch. With young children, a daytime meal generally leaves more room for a beach morning and an early bedtime. For a couple, a reserved evening dinner can be the centre of the trip. If your group cares more about Thai food than turkey, book a normal restaurant and spend the difference on an outing together.
Next, check your accommodation confirmation for a compulsory festive meal. A room rate can have a separate gala condition, and paying for two Christmas Eve dinners is an avoidable mistake. Ask the hotel to identify the exact date, the total payable for every adult and child, and whether an alternative is allowed. Do this before paying a non-refundable deposit elsewhere.
Finally, decide your transport limit. If you are staying in Lamai, you do not need to cross to Mae Nam just because a dinner appears on a list. Compare the complete evening, including the return car and time on the road. Staying in Bophut, Mae Nam, Choeng Mon or Chaweng makes the north and northeast route below easier; a south-coast stay deserves its own slower plan.
Christmas dining confirmed for 2026
Christmas Eve: Sala Thai at Santiburi, Mae Nam
Sala Thai's published Christmas Eve programme lists Thursday 24 December 2026, 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm, at Santiburi on Mae Nam Beach. The advertised adult price is THB 4,300++, with a child price of THB 2,150++. It is a Thai set-menu evening with a welcome drink and entertainment including Thai dance and Christmas music. The page requires at least one day's advance reservation and full non-refundable prepayment.
This is the option to investigate if your group wants a seated occasion with Thai flavours rather than an informal market dinner. Before paying, confirm the child age band, dietary substitutions, covered seating and final inclusive bill directly with the restaurant. Do not assume the welcome drink means unlimited drinks or that a child rate applies to every teenager. The restaurant's published contact is fb@santiburisamui.com and +66 77 425 035.
Christmas Day: Ocean Kiss at Anantara Lawana, north Chaweng
Anantara Lawana's Christmas Day brunch is published for Friday 25 December 2026, 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm. The advertised price is THB 2,590++ per adult and THB 1,250++ for children aged 6 to 12; children five and under are listed as complimentary. The programme includes festive food, music and activities for younger guests. Advance reservations are required.
This makes a useful starting point for families who want their main meal in daylight. Ask about high chairs, the children's entertainment times and where a toddler can take a quiet break. Confirm whether any drinks package is optional, how dietary requests are handled and whether your table is under cover. A Christmas brunch booking does not automatically include pool use, a daybed or general resort access.
What the plus signs do to the bill
The Lawana page states that its prices exclude 10% service charge and 7% government tax. If tax is applied after service, THB 2,590 becomes THB 3,048.43. Two adults and one child at the listed THB 1,250 base price would total approximately THB 7,568.11 before optional drinks and transport. This is a calculation using the published charges, not a quotation from the restaurant. Request the final payable amount in writing.
Do not apply that calculation automatically to every hotel. Some quote net prices; others use different displayed conditions. Compare an all-in bill for your actual party rather than two headline buffet prices. Ask what happens if someone becomes ill, your flight changes or outdoor seating cannot be used. Keep the confirmation and payment receipt accessible offline.
Where to stay for the Christmas you want
Bophut: a practical choice for travellers who want an evening stroll and restaurant choice around Fisherman's Village. The older shopfront streets give the evening a different character from a resort buffet. Check the distance from your hotel to the village itself: a property described as Bophut can still need a car. Confirm the walking route after dark rather than assuming the ring road has a comfortable pavement.
Mae Nam: worth considering if a quieter beach stay and the Santiburi dinner are your priorities. Keep lunch and beach time on this coast rather than adding an unnecessary drive to Chaweng. Ask your hotel about the actual beach access and nearby meals, especially if you have children who will not want another transfer after dinner.
Choeng Mon and north Chaweng: useful for a northeast island route and Lawana's brunch. Choeng Mon can suit a slower beach morning; Chaweng gives more choice for a lively evening. A beachfront label does not tell you about sound levels. Ask whether your room faces a bar, road or entertainment space if quiet nights matter.
Lamai: a sensible independent base when you want beach time, local meals and a south/east-coast day. Plan one special excursion north if you really want it, then keep the rest nearby. Lipa Noi and Taling Ngam suit sunset-oriented stays, but calculate every return transfer before choosing a dinner on the opposite coast. These are choices about daily convenience, not a ranking of beaches.
A three-day Christmas itinerary that leaves time to enjoy it
23 December: a northeast introduction and Bophut evening
Start after breakfast with Wat Plai Laem, then continue to Wat Phra Yai, the Big Buddha temple. Grouping these northeast stops avoids driving across the island twice. As an editorial planning allowance, give each around 30 to 45 minutes, with extra time for steps, shade and quiet observation. The allowance is not an official visit duration or ceremony schedule.
Wear clothing that covers shoulders and knees, remove shoes where indicated and keep voices low around worshippers. Do not climb on statues or treat a religious ceremony as a staged photograph. If someone cannot manage stairs, ask the driver about ground-level access before committing to the upper part of the Big Buddha visit. There is still value in a shorter visit rather than forcing everyone through the same route.
Have lunch in the Bang Rak or Choeng Mon area, then return to your accommodation for a rest. In the late afternoon, go to Fisherman's Village for the waterfront and dinner. Check current market nights locally; do not make a particular stall or street programme the reason your itinerary works. The village's restaurants are an alternative when a temporary market is absent or rain moves vendors.
24 December: one activity, then a relaxed Christmas Eve
Keep the morning compatible with your dinner district. Families staying north could choose a booked sanctuary visit, while couples might prefer a cooking class or an unhurried beach morning. Samui Elephant Sanctuary publishes scheduled visits and requires advance booking; its FAQ says visitors must use the arranged transport rather than turn up independently. It recommends booking one to two weeks ahead in the December-to-April high season.
Check which sanctuary location and programme you are booking, the actual pickup window and return arrangement. Ask how much walking is involved, whether the visit suits your child's age and whether dietary needs can be accommodated. Do not add a second attraction immediately afterward just because its map pin is nearby. Keep a gap for traffic, a shower and a meal before your Christmas Eve reservation.
For a Mae Nam dinner, stay on the north coast during the afternoon. For a Lamai restaurant, keep the day east or south. Leave generous transfer time and agree the return pickup before you sit down. A driver needs the restaurant entrance and your hotel's actual access road, particularly for hillside villas. Do not rely on finding an available car at the exact moment every other table leaves.
25 December: choose brunch or a beach picnic day
If you have reserved Lawana brunch, eat a light breakfast and leave the morning mostly free. A short walk or pool period near your accommodation is more useful than squeezing in a distant waterfall. Aim to arrive before your seating time and confirm where to check in; Christmas events may use a different entrance or host desk from the usual restaurant service.
If a big buffet is not your idea of Christmas, buy a simple lunch or reserve a regular Thai restaurant near your beach. A long beach afternoon, a video call home and a modest dinner can feel more personal than a package. Keep food shaded, take rubbish away and use public access respectfully. Do not assume you can carry food onto a hotel's private dining terrace or occupy its loungers without permission.
Finish with a short evening walk in the district where you are already staying. Avoid booking a sea excursion and a non-refundable Christmas lunch on the same day. Weather, pier transfers and a late boat can turn a good outing into an expensive missed reservation. Put the boat trip on a different day with room to change the plan.
December weather: build a land plan as well as a sea plan
Koh Samui is in the Gulf of Thailand, so Phuket's seasonal advice is not a reliable substitute. December can bring rain and wind even during a busy beach holiday. Check the Thai Meteorological Department's Samui forecast, then ask the actual boat operator about the route, sea conditions and any closure affecting the day. A sunny breakfast does not establish that an offshore crossing is suitable.
For a boat outing, ask whether park admission, hotel pickup, equipment and lunch are included. Confirm the pier and return window, the minimum age and how a cancelled departure is handled. Keep the booking away from your flight home and your main festive meal. If swimming is important, follow beach flags and local advice rather than choosing a bay from the colour of a photograph.
For persistent rain, switch to a covered cooking session, a booked treatment or a long lunch with proper indoor seating. Tamarind Springs is a real spa option to investigate near the Chaweng-to-Lamai side of the island, but it is a forest-spa experience, not a fully indoor attraction. Ask what remains available in heavy rain, the minimum age and cancellation terms. For children, a hotel activity room or a short food outing may be a better substitute than a long treatment.
Food beyond the festive buffet
Make one meal about the island rather than Christmas. At a Thai restaurant, order several dishes to share: a soup, a vegetable dish and a fish or curry with rice will often work better than everyone choosing a separate main. Tell the staff about allergies explicitly; a vegetarian-looking dish may still contain fish sauce or shrimp paste. Ask for the spice level you want, and request sauces separately for children where possible.
For seafood sold by weight, agree the species, weight, cooking method and total price before the kitchen starts. Ask whether rice, sauces and side dishes are extra. At a market, start with a small selection rather than buying more than you can carry or keep cool. Ordinary Thai lunches can balance one expensive festive meal without reducing the quality of the trip.
Transport, access and the final booking checklist
Samui is not a single walkable resort. Agree whether a transfer price is per person or per vehicle, whether waiting is included and what a late pickup costs. Save the driver's contact and both pickup pins. For a family, arrange a suitable child restraint in advance; do not discover at dinner that the return vehicle cannot meet your needs. Avoid making your first attempt at scooter riding during a holiday stay.
For reduced mobility, ask about the entire route from vehicle to table: steps, steep paths, loose sand and toilet access. A beachfront restaurant may be attractive but awkward to reach. Ask for a photo of the entrance or the accessible route when a vague assurance is not enough. For a child who needs quiet, request a table away from speakers and confirm whether you can leave and re-enter during entertainment.
Before paying, have written answers to these questions: Which date and seating? Which menu? What is the final total? What drinks and children's terms apply? Is there covered seating? What does the deposit commit you to? How will you get home? Once those are settled, stop adding reservations. The island is more enjoyable when the plan leaves room for a good lunch you find along the way.
